“I Place One Foot Before The Other” / 6th September 2026

Part 08: Werne – Dortmund (-Brechten)
(KM 114 – 135)
Saturday, 06th September 2026

Earlier this months I tackled another section of the Westphalian Way of Saint James [DE]. Once again I had prepared three options to end the hike, depending on my state of fitness.

I made it till the final of three options: 24 km, ~21 of those on the actual Way and 3 more on the way to and from. Once again I had forgotten to bring a hat, because once again I left my home in a hurry.

All in all the walk was fine most of time. Lots of small town / urban area to start with, intersperesed with some nature / wood / farmland. I realized that on even terrain ~ 18 km are fine for me. The next two are okay-ish. But the last two were hard! So hard! I should take that into consideration for the next section, even though this probably needs to be another long – 22 km – hike. North to south through the city of Dortmund. Urban hiking. At least than I’ll then hopefully manage to pass through the whole city one day. Which was one of the reasons I pushed on to get to the city borders on this one.

On this one day I passed the whole evolution of power supply: the view of a restored as museum coal mine an fossil fuel powered power plant to the wind turbine. As someone who works in the climate action field that was sort of interesting to document.
