“Thatcher Fucked the Kids (Germany 2026 Remix)”

Frank Turner on Stage at Campfire Punkrock 20

The following was part of a concert review of Frank Turner’s solo tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his first EP “Campfire Punkrock” earlier this year.
Now, nearing the end of the year, the actions and statements and basically everything about Katharina Reiche, the German Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy are still driving me up the wall. So I felt the need to pick this post as the first to repost here.

The one song I was most looking forward on at this particular tour and most enjoyed singing along to was “Thatcher Fucked the Kids” [lyrics / a live version in 2023] which I was pretty sure I’d hear Frank play.

In 2022, when Frank started to bring this song out of retirement for a bit and played it on a few ocassions I had already shared some of my thoughts. This time I was determined to write a proper long explainatory piece about why I can relate to that song SO much these days.

I spent a whole day on it. I had already gotten a draft of about 1.500 words and still was only half way through everything I thought I wanted to say. I stopped, reconsidered my approach and realized I’d never be able to be as clear and concise in my interpretation as this clear and concise song deserves. (That’s why Frank is the successful songwriter and I’m… not)

Let’s just say the song definitely still holds up, as Frank stated on stage each night. It holds up in the sense that governments – as in Germany at the moment – are too often run by folks who

[….] just closed your eyes to the other side

[are] a guy in a suit who wouldn’t lift a finger for anybody else.

[….] as soon as they were settled as the richest of the rich,
They kicked away the ladder, told the rest of us that life’s a bitch.

[….] sold the future for the highest bid

If you’re interested in my take on the last one I could now easily give you a 30 minute rant on how our current Minister of Energy seems to neither care about the climate crisis nor about how to decarbonize the energy industries, because she used be a lobbyist for the fossil fuel industry. My rant would include terms like subsidies and electrical grid. What can I say? I’ve been working in the climate action field since 2012. Ranting about these current policies is kind of in my job description.

But that was the point in the 1.500 words draft when I realized: nope, a detailed dissection of the lyrics is not going to work.

My frustration with the current German government is based on all the lyrics quoted above. It’s based on the government’s ongoing tendency to protect the interests of the rich and wealthy while at at the same time punch down and make life harder for the working class, for single mums, for people who are a bit less fortunate and who haven’t been as privileged as most of the people in charge.

My frustration is based on the ongoing accusatory implication that anyone, who is in need of financial or other aid from the government is lazy, stupid and just needs to be taught a lesson by tightening the screws of the benefits system.

My frustration is very much based on the ongoing – often not even veiled – xenophobia or plain racism from our chancellor Friedrich Merz.

And anyone who looks [different] than me
Makes me check for my wallet and my phone and my keys,

They all really are fucking most of us over at the moment.

I have no idea how we will ever be able to bridge the rift they seem to very purposefully create with their policies and their “them vs us” narrative which only feeds into the neo fascist AfD party playbook.

But when no one ever smiles or ever helps a stranger,
Is it any fucking wonder our society’s in danger of collapse?

In a different context – the intro to “Be More Kind” – Frank talked about all of that each night as well. How we need to fight the fascists who are out there marching. But he also said the following (and I was determined to record it at my 2nd gig so I could remember and quote him on it)

Let us not become angry,
Let us not become hateful,
Let us not become small,
Let us not become incurious.

Let us stay loving and kind and funny and joyous and human
And all of those good things.

Singing along to “Thatcher….” in a room full of like minded people helps me to handle my frustration.

Having Frank remind me to stay joyous and human and all those good things actually helps me to stay hopeful in this world we live in.

“Instead of Staring at Their Tiny Screens”

A few days ago my all-time favourite artist (singer/songwriter, performer, entertainer,…) Frank Turner announced that in November 2027 he’ll be taking a step back from his professional life as we know it. In my mind I’m calling it a sabbatical of undetermined length, not a retirement. My fangirl heart refuses to believe it’s a retirement.

A good friend had sent me the link to Frank’s Facebook post while I was running errands. When I clicked the link on my phone I saw this.

Screenshot of the preview of the Facebook post

Once the initial shock wore off, I read the full text in that post once more and my brain for some reason latched on the following words

[…] the music industry has been swallowed by social media in a way that doesn’t really interest me […]

I’m sure this statement was prompted by more and different aspects than the one I’m touching on here. I have no idea how using or rather being required to use social media looks from Frank’s side. I’m just the passive consumer receiving any message / “content” he sends out there.

The aspect my brain so irrationally latched on was how this so typical for social media post preview looked on my phone screen. Various images. White letters on various black squares. Different font sizes, different margins. Some images were cut off in the preview. It looked disjointed and made my head hurt.

This is in no way meant as criticism towards Frank. He’s merely adhering to the rules of attention economics. It’s what his job requires these days, when he wants to get a message out to the people who he wants to come see his show, buy his music etc.

I wonder though when in the past few years the switch happened from

sharing information in one full length text on some kind of stationary website

to

sharing information via text slapped on images and these shared on social media

But that’s obviously the crazy world we live in and I’ve SO grown to loathe this.

Take a step back and think about the process behind it.

You write something you want people to read. With help from an app or AI or old school DIY with any photo editor you take your well thought-out, articulated and structured text and divide it into easily digestible snack-size-portions to slap these portioned words onto an image /  graphic. The text needs to be easily read on a phone screen so you pick a large font size. But space is limited (1080 x 1920 pixel) so there is often more than one image, hence the “social media carousel” with easily swipeable slides.

Isn’t that absolutely insane?

Don’t ask me why it was Frank’s social media carousel to announce the plans for his future that turned on my rant mode and not any of the others I see or rather mostly skim over on Instagram these days. It might have been the combination with his statement I quote above. In the past Frank mentioned often enough that he dislikes social media for all of the well known reasons: the negative impact on public discourse, our mental health and our lives in general.

So I read his words about social media in the full length text (!!), glanced down to the collection of text graphics and thought:

“What a relief it must be for him to not have to care about any of this shit (for a long while) after his final bow in November next year! Good for him!”

I don’t know. I honestly have no idea what he thinks. I’m speculating here and I might only be doing that, because my brain and heart refuse to start processing, what his decision means for me. That’s the funny thing about being a fangirl. His decision is not about me at all, but in a way it still hugely affects me, which makes it feel kind of personal. Even though it is not. Does that make any sense?

I will most probably write a post about my thoughts, emotions and personal development of the past 13 years, in which Frank’s music, gigs and more played such a huge part in my life. Once I have figured out how to articulate it in a coherent and adequate way.

The title of this post is taken from Frank’s song “Get it Right” (2018)

It’s Going To Take a While…

I have a vague idea or plan which posts to archive here in this space. Transferring them here and in that process cleaning up the HTML in the backend of most of those post is tedious work though. I had underestimated that and often times I can’t be bothered to spend time in front of a computer screen after 8 hours of work in front of a computer screen.

Bear with me…
